Barrio judío de Budapest / Visita judía con guía

The inner part of Erzsébetváros (i.e. the 7th district of Budapest), close to the city centre, started to be called the "Jewish Quarter" in the 2000s. On the one hand, because since the 19th century the main centres of the religious life of the Orthodox Jews of Budapest were located here: the Dohány Street Synagogue, which is the second largest synagogue in the world and the largest in Europe, the Rumbach Street Synagogue and the Kazinczy Street Synagogue. On the other hand, in 1944, this area (between Király Street, Kertész Street, Dohány Street and Károly Boulevard) was designated the so-called "big ghetto", where tens of thousands of Jews were moved together and at the same time the non-Jewish population was expelled. Later, wealthier families moved out of this neglected part of the city, leaving many apartment buildings empty. By the turn of the millennium, these houses had become the ruin pubs and popular places to eat in the city, such as the Szimpla.

On the cultural front, Massolit and Mazel Tov are popular.

It is possible to ask our Budapest guides for a specifically "Jewish themed" tour, including synagogues (these require special training for guides who are already trained, which not everyone has), the streets of the "Jewish quarter", and the Holocaust Memorial in Liberty Square, as well as other Jewish monuments.
