Budapest is the capital and largest city of Hungary, located in the north of the country, on the banks of the Danube. It has officially existed since 1873, when the former capital (Buda) merged with Pest and Óbuda.

Budapest is one of the most important metropolises in Central Europe and the 8th most populous city among European capitals. It is one of the most important cultural (national library, numerous museums, galleries, theatres, opera houses) and scientific centres (Academy of Sciences, Eötvös Loránd University (since 1635), University of Technology and Economics (since 1782), Academy of Fine Arts, numerous other universities and research institutes), as well as a major tourist and health centre (balneological complexes).
Today's Budapest is divided into 23 districts, each with its own administration. The whole city is governed by the Metropolitan Municipality (Fővárosi Önkormányzat).
