In the 18th century, the City Park was a deserted area of marshes and pastures.
At the end of the 18th century, János Boráros, the town magistrate, began to turn the "forest", which had by then become a popular place for hikers, into a funfair.
Soon afterwards, it passed into the hands of Prince Primate József Batthyány, who saw the solution in the planned afforestation and development of the forest. Sebestyén Rumbach, a doctor, bought the land for the purpose of growing grapes, but while digging a well, he was surprised to find a spring of iron and immediately had Pest's first spa built.
But bathers were not the only visitors to the Liget at this time, as the area was rented out by the showman Lipót Grossinger.
During the reform era, it was called the City Forest and became a popular entertainment venue. There was a shooting gallery, a slide and a dance hall.
In fact, entertainment has been the main focus ever since: a circus, a zoo, an amusement park, a lake, a skating rink in winter and playgrounds are still found in the vast park.
