Budapest is the capital of Hungary and the largest Hungarian city. It has nearly 200000 inhabitants. It is also the centre of Hungarian culture, art, business and education.
It officially exists since 1873, before which Buda was the capital. However, by that time Pest was already a large city, and the first permanent bridges on the Danube were built, connecting the 2 parts of the city and Óbuda.
The city is bisected in the middle by the Danube, but the bridges (there are 9 bridges in Budapest) connect the flat Pest and the mountainous valley of Buda. There are 3 islands on the Danube in Budapest, the largest and most famous of which is Margaret Island, which we will see today. The Danube runs for 420 km through the country.
