Margaret Island

The Margaret Island (German: Margareteninsel, Turkish: Kızadası, in the Middle Ages: Nyulaksziget) is a 2.5 km long, 500 m wide, 0.965 km2 (96.5 hectares) island on the Danube in the territory of Budapest, and is a part of the capital city, known as Margaret Island (in one word).

Apart from two hotels, restaurants, sports and bathing facilities, an open-air stage and the Margaret Island water tower, there are no buildings on the island, as the whole island is actually a huge park, in fact a huge park of the capital with medieval sacral architecture, sculptural alleys, small ponds, a fountain and a zoo. Vehicular traffic is prohibited, except for buses and taxis, and there is a car park accessible from the Árpád Bridge. According to the 2018 data of the Central Statistical Office, the island had a population of 6 people and 3 dwellings.[2] Its medieval ruins are a reminder of its importance as a religious centre in the Middle Ages. The island is connected to the south by the Margaret Bridge and to the north by the Árpád Bridge to the Pest and Óbuda quays. Before the 14th century the island was called Insula leporum (Island of Rabbits).

Its current appearance was developed by combining three separate islands, Festő, Fürdő and Nyulak Island, at the end of the 19th century to control the flow of the Danube.
